Once there was a tigress in a jungle. A brahman was passing by. He saw her starving. He feared that she might eat her own cubs. So, he climbed a hillock and jumped to death in front of her so that the tigress can eat his dead body and spare her cubs.—The brahman was none other than the Buddha in his former existence.
